Visit to Sulgrave Manor - June 2011

Our chairman pulls it off again.  What a fantastic day out .

43 of us went by coach to visit Sulgrave Manor in Northhamptonshire.
We left in the rain, the sun shone while we were there, we came back in the rain. Perfect!

Sulgrave Manor is the ancestral home of George Washington. It is unique in that it is owned equally between the UK and the USA and flies the flag of both countries. There were pretty gardens, a museum with an exhibition about George Washington’s life and the house itself to enjoy.  What made the day for me were the guides.  Their knowledge of the customs prevailing when the house was occupied by George’s ancesters was phenomenal. We learnt about keeping your place in society, about hanging babies on the wall out of harms way, what foods were eaten by different sections of society and so on.  We also learnt where the source  of many our present day expressions originated.  Expressions like the ‘Upper crust’       ‘Above board’  ‘Chairman of the Board’.   All these expressions come from the times of Tudor England or earlier.
An amazing day that will be long remembered by those who went.
